Our History
Riverside Adventure Co. (originally Island Passage) was established on Bald Head Island in 1983.
At the invitation of the Mitchell Family, Harper and Plunkett Peterson initially introduced a bicycle rental program on weekends at the old Bald Head Inn. In 1984 they added canoes and carts and in 1985 opened their first retail clothing and gift presentation in the present Riverside location.
Since then the business has grown to provide a diversity of services at four locations on the island; Riverside Adventure, The Sail Shop (est.2010), Maritime Passage (est. 2001) and Canopy Outfitters (est. 2007). Each location has a unique character and retail presentation.
In addition to their business involvement, Harper & Plunkett established the first nature day camp on the island, were co-founders of the annual Fourth of July Parade, Lighthouse Easter Egg Hunt, and managed the original Sunday
church service in the old Inn and served on the inaugural Bald Head Island Chapel Committee.
The story of Island Passage/Riverside is not complete without mentioning ‘Pops’ Peterson, Harper’s dad. For 18 years he managed the cart, bicycle and canoe rentals on the island and served as a wonderful ambassador of good will and helpfulness to all who crossed his path.
Today, he continues his legacy, as one of the state’s oldest employees, working on the Fort Fisher Ferry. Pops will celebrate his 94th birthday in February, 2011.
We continue to enjoy a good working relationship with Bald Head Island Limited. We’re proud of their vision and accomplishments and we strive to continue to be an island partner in providing unique retail and recreational offerings with friendly and knowledgeable staff.
